Festival promises a weekend of folk, food and fun

All roads lead to Dartmoor on 23- 25 October, when one of the country’s best loved folk festivals hits the streets, halls and pubs of Okehampton.

The Band of HM Royal Marines Plymouth is based at the Royal Navy Initial Training Establishment, HMS Raleigh, in Torpoint, Cornwall. Performing at Plymouth University gives the band a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate its versatility in the concert band idiom with some outstanding soloists, big band jazz ensemble, and contemporary symphonic wind band compositions, as well as giving an insight into a career in military music.

War with France put a damper on artistic life in Vienna in the summer of 1806, but winter brought a revival and the first large-scale orchestral concert was given by the violinist Franz Clement, leader of the Vienna Opera Orchestra. Beethoven wrote his violin concerto for this event. Today, it is praised as a masterpiece of tenderness and serenity.

Brahms: Symphony No.1 in C minor Nicolai: The Merry Wives of Windsor Overture

Brahms took 21 years to compose his first symphony. The conductor for the premiere, Hans von Bülow, referred to it as 'Beethoven's 10th' - but it's more of a homage than plagiarism. From the opening bar this work is impressive and magnificent – and yes the finale does sound much like that of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.

This event is free, with donations to Plymouth University Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence gratefully received.

This is a selection from our best-loved British composers and includes Jonathan Pitkin’s Whispering, clamoring commissioned by Ten Tors Orchestra in 2005.
