Exeter Philharmonic Choir and the English Chamber Orchestra perform Beethoven’s masterpiece Missa Solemnis to mark 250 years since the composer’s birth

Beethoven’s magnificent Missa Solemnis, widely considered to be his greatest choral work yet rarely performed in the South West, will be brought to life this March through the combined talent of Exeter Philharmonic Choir, the renowned English Chamber Orchestra and four international soloists.

The one-night performance of this theatrical, yet spiritual work celebrates Beethoven’s 250th birthday. Exeter Philharmonic Choir is the city’s longest-established choral group, soon to mark a major milestone of its own - its 175th anniversary.

Plymouth chamber choir Phoenix Chorale are performing their festive concert ‘Christmas is here!’ in St Peter’s Parish Church, Wyndham Square on Saturday 14th December at 7.30pm. This will be the first concert with their new musical director Simon Badge, who is also currently serving with the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth based at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint.

University of Plymouth Choral Society and Sinfonia Summer Concert

For this concert, the University of Plymouth Choral Society and Sinfonia have chosen three contrasting works of Mozart, and a favourite Bruckner motet.

Mozart’s delightful string serenade Eine Kleine Nacht Musik precedes his setting of Ave Verum Corpus – a motet that portrays redemptive meaning of suffering. Bruckner paid homage to this work in his own Locus Iste. Mozart’s Requiem – in the portentous key of D minor – is haunting and powerful.

Sound poets Tomomi Adachi and Hannah Silva join forces, presenting Pluto is a Planet! in which they literarily play the shirts off their backs, using gesture and infrared sensors to process their voices live. Silva performs tracks from her acclaimed debut album Talk in a bit and Adachi presents an extraordinary selection of sound poetry, from Japanese dada to his own soaring and percussive vocal compositions.
