Archbishop Colerado of Salzburg liked his masses short and composed in a simple direct musical style. Mozart produced for him a glorious and delightful miniature. You can hear in Pergolesi’s Magnificat the early stylistic traits which were to grow into the classical style, and which would one day, albeit retrospectively, be called 'Mozartean'.
