An Evening of Jazz, Blues and Improvisation with Sam Richards

Part of University of Plymouth Music Week 2018

A feast of jazz, blues and improvisation is hosted by Sam Richards with a full complement of performers.

The evening features final year students and jazz/blues duo, Dylan Ellis and Angelica Cashman, and concludes with a set from final year bass clarinet and sax player, Alex Lloyd with his Alex Lloyd Trio.

Nestled somewhere in the middle the audience will be treated to a Conduction session. This is a technique of ensemble improvisation, which will be directed by Sam Richards and performed by Music to Our Ears.

The Steve Buckley Trio with Katherine Williams and Tom Armstrong

Steve Buckley (sax, penny whistle and bass clarinet) is a British jazz musician who was a member of the pioneering band Loose Tubes, and also played with Human Chain, Microgroove and Django Bates’ Delightful Precipice. He has recorded with various African and Latin bands, and trumpeter Chris Batchelor.

Joining him in the trio is the magnificent Ric Byer on drums and virtuoso bassist Jim Rintoul.

Music: The Roaring Twenties Tea Dance Featuring the ArtDeco Band

Live jazz performed by the ArtDeco Band Steve Chisolm, band leader

Led by vocalist Steve Chisolm, for many years resident ‘crooner’ at the famous Burgh Island Hotel, ArtDeco recreates the authentic sounds of the jazz and ‘hot’ jazz bands of the 1920s.

Join in, show off your Charleston and enjoy afternoon tea in the elegant Duke of Cornwall Ballroom. Period 1920s costumes invited, but not essential.

Peninsula Arts Sinfonietta is joined by internationally praised star soprano, Alwyn Mellor, for this celebration of 1920s’ British and American music.

Great songs and English pastoral classics make up this concert, celebrating the innovation, free spirit and sheer fun of the decade. The programme will include show songs by George Gerswin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Jerome Kern and Fats Waller including With a song in my heart, Can’t help lovin dat man, Ain’t Misbehavin and Let’s do it, Let’s fall in love.

Music: Noel Coward and His Legacy

Cabaret duo Kit Hesketh-Harvey and James McConnel pay homage to 'The Master’, performing many of Coward’s enduring songs, as well as some lesser-known gems.

Peppered with anecdotes and chat, plus one or two offerings of their own, join them for an evening of wit and sophistication.

Talk: Rhapsodies in Paint: Modern Art and The Jazz Age - Dr Jody Patterson

Art and music have long engaged in cultural dialogue and exchange. This talk by Jody Patterson, Associate Professor and Programme Leader for Art History, Plymouth University, will address the impact of jazz music and the dynamics of improvisation on the development of modern art.

From Kandinsky’s early abstractions to Matisse’s vibrant paper 'cut-out’ collages, the new rhythms of jazz inspired artists to fuse European tradition with African American expression, pushing the conventional boundaries of painting.

Gallery Bar Special with Gavin Randle

With influences from Miles Davis and David Sanborn, Gavin Randle is an incredibly skilled saxaphonist.

He experiments with Nu Jazz and Funk, aswell as playing jazz standards.

Saltram celebrates the 18th annual jazz picnic

On Saturday 20 July, Saltram, near Plympton, will be throwing open its gates for another evening of jumping jazz in partnership with Plymouth Jazz Club.

Now a firm favourite in the events calendar, this year’s jazz picnic looks set to be another fantastic night with the return of two great bands, Roger Mark’s Cornish Armada Jazz Band and Mike Cox’s New Orleans Jazz Band.

Gates open at 5.30pm, with the event running from 6pm-11pm. Pack your picnic, dig out your folding chairs and picnic rugs, and dust off those dancing...
