Exeter Philharmonic Choir opens its 176th season with musical fireworks in memory of the Queen 

There will be musical fireworks in Exeter Cathedral on Saturday, 5 November with a glorious concert in memory of the late Queen, combining the exciting sounds of choir, brass, organ and percussion.

Exeter Philharmonic Choir had planned to open its 176th season with a celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. The concert will now be a tribute to the Queen’s long reign. 

EPC’s Director of Music Howard Ionascu has chosen a varied programme which starts with Psalm 100 by Renaissance composer Schutz and culminates with contemporary composer John Rutter’s Gloria.  The concert features the brilliant Onyx Brass, described by The Times as ‘the classiest brass ensemble in Britain’. 

Howard says, “The brilliance of the sound created by Onyx Brass is a perfect complement to a large choir like ours. Their performances are always spirited - fascinating to watch and listen to.

“We have three percussionists to add into the mix for added colour, and our assistant Director of Music, Stephen Tanner, will work his magic on the organ.’
