March is over-60s month at two top Devon zoos. The charity attractions are holding special days for older people.

At Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo, the day of the week to make a note of is Wednesday. At Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, the special day is Thursday. Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts are both part of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, the charity which also runs Newquay Zoo in Cornwall.

Spokesperson Phil Knowling said: “There are so many older people who are interested in zoos and conservation. This is an incentive to prompt a few more to come in and see our conservation work in action. March is also a good month to visit Paignton Zoo if you’re interested in gardens, as Spring will be blooming. And there are plenty of undercover places for when it rains. We’re all about conservation, education, inspiration - and a great lunch!”

On Wednesdays at Living Coasts during March, eligible people will save 30% on admission. In addition, the café will offer fish and chips and mushy peas for £5.99 (normally £8) and the zoo shop will give a 10% discount. Meanwhile, at Paignton Zoo, you’ll get similar advantages on any Thursday, plus the chance to hire an electric scooter at a discounted rate.

“Our zoos are also great places to bring your grandchildren when you are looking after them at weekends or during school holidays. And you could consider the long-term money-saving trick of becoming annual pass holders.

“For the over-60s days, proof of eligibility may be required - especially if you look younger than 60.”
