St Mary’s Church Bideford has a very fine peal of bells which regularly ring out over the town. The eight bells, all made and installed by Taylor’s of Peterborough in 1929 have recently been assessed by specialists Nicholson Engineering of Bridport. They say that musically ’the bells make a particularly fine peal’. They are now in need of some repair and restoration, however, and money needs to be raised to make this possible.

The Bdeford Bells event will take place the evening before Bell Sunday, the annual national celebration of bells and bellringing. It will feature a wide range of music, and a selection of poetry and prose about bells and what they mean to our lives. There will also be a chance to hear more about our bells and the people who ring them.

Members of the St Mary’s church family have been contributing messages about what the bells mean to them, and we would welcome any other comments and memories- all will be featured in the show.

Admission is £7 on the door and includes a free glass of wine.

If you would like to share a memory, please send it to me John Hedge at hedgejohn59@gmail.com.
