Talking rubbish and recycling

Council staff are out and about in the next few weeks to spread the ‘New Year new bin day’ message.

A number of community events are being organised across the city so that people can chat about the new arrangements that will come in on January 19.

The roadshows are a chance to ask questions about the new collections as well as get advice on what to recycle and what the guidelines are for putting bins and bags out.

Councillor Brian Vincent, Cabinet Member for the Environment said: “This is a chance for people to talk to us about the changes and any questions they may have about rubbish and recycling.”

All the events take place in January:

• Tuesday 6  Have Your Say meeting –Turnchapel, Hooe, Oreston and Mount Batten, 7pm at Hooe Baptist Church, Hooe Road
• Wednesday 7 Efford Library from 10am to 12am
• Thursday 8 Have Your Say meeting – Plympton St Maurice, Underwood and Yealmpstone, 6pm, Lipson Community College, Bernice Terrace
• Friday 9 Laira Library from 9.30am to 12.30am
• Saturday 10 Central Library from 9.30am to 5.30pm
• Monday 12 Southway Shopping Centre from  9am to 12am
• Tuesday 13 Life Centre from 9.30am to 4.30pm
• Wednesday 14 Plympton Ridgeway Shopping Centre from 9am to 12am
• Thursday 15 Plymstock Broadway Shopping Centre from 9am to 12am
• Friday 16 Plymouth University Students Union from 9.30am to 4pm
• Monday 19 Have Your Say meeting – Colebrook, Newnham and Ridgeway,  7pm Colebrook Community Centre
• And in the City Centre Sundial 9am to 5.30pm
• Tuesday 20 Have Your Say meeting – Southway, 6.30pm, Southway Library

Thousands of cards have been delivered to homes across the city just before Christmas to let people know about their new bin collections. The new rounds start on January 19.

The rounds are being introduced as part of a review of the Council’s services, to make them more efficient and to take into account the new waste disposal plant at Devonport which will take the city’s rubbish that cannot be recycled.
