Updated 10.00pm.

A fire that began in a spray workshop at Youngs Car Body Repair in Miller Court in the Millbay area of the city has been extinguished by fire crews.

The severity and potential of a fire that began just after 4pm and had spread to neighbouring buildings containing toxic substances, led police Police to treat the fire as a major incident . People were advised to avoid the area and residents to remain indoors and to keep their doors and windows shut. Part of the area was sealed off for safety.

Huge plumes of smoke were witnessed and explosions heard from the industrial estate.

Reports suggest that police would have implemented an evacuation plan in the event of further escalation of the danger which would have seen locals moved to Plymouth Pavilions.

Pumping appliances from Greenbank, Camels Head, Crownhill and Plymstock stations were called to the scene together with support appliances and reports. Fire crews, including fire fighters equipped with breathing apparatus, were continuing to check the safety of the buildings and contents this evening.
