Lord Mayor raises the flag for Armed Forces Week

The Armed Forces Flag will be flown from Plymouth Guildhall flagpole to mark the start of Plymouth Armed Forces Week following a ceremony on Monday 22 June.

The ceremony will take place at 10am in front of the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Dr John Mahony, and the Lord Leiutenant of Devon’s representative, Deputy Lieutenant Sir Peter Squire.

Other civic and military leaders will also be present including Plymouth City Council Leader Councillor Tudor Evans, Deputy Leader Councillor Peter Smith, Leader of the Opposition Councillor Ian Bowyer, and Chief Executive of Plymouth City Council Tracey Lee.

The flag raising ceremony will be followed by a reception where the Lord Mayor will present three veterans with their badges and the winner and runners-up for the Armed Forces Day Badge competition.

The flag will be flown all week, including during Armed Forces Day which takes place on Plymouth Hoe on Saturday 27 June.

Lord Mayor Councillor Dr John Mahony said: “Armed Forces Week is an opportunity to thank our local armed forces personnel for their hard work and dedication, and to commemorate the sacrifices they make to keep us all safe.

“Marking this event in a city such as Plymouth with strong military connections is most important.”
