Empire of the Sun (1987)

J.G. Ballard Series
Plus an introduction to the J.G. Ballard Series by Anna Navas

Running time: 146 minutes, certificate: PG UK, language: English

Dir: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Christian Bale, John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson, Nigel Havers

Based on J. G. Ballard’s autobiographical novel, Christian Bale stars as Jamie Graham, a spoiled young British boy living with his wealthy family in Shanghai on the eve of World War II. During the Japanese invasion he is separated from his parents and ends up in a prisoner of war camp where he falls under the care of two very different men and has to learn how to survive alone. The film, like Ballard’s novel, explores the line between privilege, class and society in breakdown during wartime and the transition from childhood to adulthood and the inevitable loss of innocence that is accelerated by conflict.
