Portraits by pioneering female artist go on show at Museum and Art Gallery

A touring exhibition from the National Portrait Gallery, London featuring paintings by one of the most popular and pioneering British artists of the 20th century will open at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday 1 March.

Dame Laura Knight (1877 - 1970) was one of the most popular and pioneering British artists of the twentieth century.

Her artistic career took her from Cornwall to Baltimore, and from the circus to the Nuremberg Trials. She painted dancers at the Ballets Russes and gypsies at Empsom races, and was acclaimed for her work as an official war artist.

Knight used portraiture to capture contemporary life and culture, and her paintings are remarkable for their diverse range of subjects and settings.

Interference Patterns 1968 - 2013 (Kieron Lyons)

Kieran Lyons exploration of drawing spans for more than thirty years.

His detailed drawings map the line of travel and the "impulse that attracts a drawn line away from its original direction of travel".

The exhibition aims to represent the artist's varied and diverse practice, as he uses sculpture, installation, animation and digital projection as a tool to explore the notion of drawing. Currently the artist is influenced by the artist, Marcel Duchamps first experiments with chance, and with this has created new work especially for this exhibition.
