Fifteen players from Plympton Grammar School Old Boys Hockey Club are tackling Plymouth’s Half Marathon on 27 April 2014, to raise vital funds for its chosen club charity of the year, Transplant Sport, and specifically the Plymouth Transplant Sports Team.

Last year, players raised an incredible £2,100 throughout the year for the Plymouth and District Leukaemia Fund, in memory of much loved club player and friend, Pete Farrow.

Bruce Danbury, Secretary at PGSOB Mens Hockey Club, said: “Last year was a very poignant year for our club fundraising, and this year we are hoping to build on those efforts and raise even more funds for a local charity that provides incredible sporting opportunities for people who have overcome adversity.

“The Plymouth Transplant Sports Team currently consists predominantly of kidney transplant recipients who have had their transplant operation carried out within the South West Transplant Centre at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. Each year, they are successful in sending a number of athletes to the British Transplant Games, but this is not possible without the ongoing support around them.

“As a sports team, we recognise the importance and difference that sport can make in people’s lives, and we want to help ensure that more individuals can benefit from participation, no matter what their circumstance.”

Plymouth’s Half Marathon is now in its 21st year and attracts thousands of runners each year to take on the 13.1mile challenge. There are still a number of charity spots remaining for those who missed out on general registration.
