World Championships in doubt for Tom Daley

Plymouth's 2009 World Champion and Olympic bronze medallist diver Tom Daley will face a battle to be fit for the World Championships in Barcelona .

Daley flew out on Tuesday (16 July) but has been suffering from a glandular problem that has left his participation in the 10m platform event on 27 and 28 July in doubt.

Swollen glands have prevented the 19-year-old from preparing fully for the event though it is hoped he will have recovered in time to compete in ten days time. If so, with preparation time key, the British team will hope Daley's form will not have suffered from his restricted training build-up.

The setback follows Daley's enforced withdrawal from the European Championships in Germany last month and recent world series events in Florida and Mexico with an elbow injury.

The team remain optimistic. Coach Andy Banks told BBC Devon: "He's still chomping at the bit, and I'm sure he'll give as good a performance as he can."
