A newly formed netball club in Mutley will be getting its own kit and equipment for 2014, thanks to a community grant from local ward councillor Chaz Singh.

Phoenix Netball Club currently has to borrow bibs, balls and cones from Plymouth College, where it trains, but the £125 grant means it can start the New Year with its own kit bag.

Established in September, the club has already set up an under-16s team and a senior team playing in the local league. It now hopes to develop more junior teams and is working with the Council’s sports development unit to promote netball in the local area and deliver sessions at the nearby Mount Street Primary School.

Councillor Singh said: “Phoenix have only been up and running for a few months but are already playing an important role in encouraging young people in the local area to play netball. I’m really pleased to award part of my community grant allocation to the club and I know it will make a big difference to them.”

Head Coach Karen Dent said: “This is fantastic news and we are really grateful to Councillor Singh for his support. Having our own equipment will not only be better for the team but also means we will be able to run coaching sessions for new players at other venues.”

Phoenix Netball Club trains at Plymouth College on Wednesday evenings and is always keen to welcome new players. To find out more call Karen Dent on 07895 447613.
