Gold for Plymouth's Ruta Meilutyte

Plymouth's swimming sensation Ruta Meilutyte has become 100m breaststroke world champion in Barcelona to add to her Olympic gold medal, won in London last year.

The 16-year-old Lithuanian, who attends Plymouth College, won the World Aquatic Championships final in a time of 1:04.42 seconds, just outside the world record of 1:04.35 she set in her semi-final on Monday.

"Being a part of history is absolutely amazing," Meilutyte told the BBC.

The Olympic and new world champion who is coached by Jon Rudd, swims for Plymouth Leander, after moving to Plymouth from Lithuania three years ago.

Her performance marks her out as one of the great champions in her event and emphatically the best in the world in the 100m breaststroke discipline.
