Devon defeat Cornwall in final over finish

Cricket Minor Counties Championship, Exeter

Devon CCC (263 all out & 248-5) beat Cornwall CCC (264 all out & 246 all out) by five wickets

Devon County Cricket Club beat rivals Cornwall by five wickets in the last over of a tight match in the Minor Counties Championship at Exeter.

Set 248 to win, Devon reached the target with five balls to spare to overhaul the reigning champions.

The teams were virtually level after their innings. Cornwall set a reasonable though very gettable target of 248 after their second, with Tom Hughes making 70.  With 65 overs of the final day remaining, Devon needed to put some batting partnerships together to put them on course for victory.

Solid innings from Seb Benton who made 50 and David Lye (48) had set Devon on their way, but at 174-5 and with only 14 overs remaining, they had work to do.

However, calmly judged innings from Josh Bess (68 not out) and Matt Golding (36 not out) ensured they won the game.

Devon will face Wales away at Usk in their next game starting on 23 June.

Meanwhile Cornwall play Berkshire on Sunday in the MCCA Trophy quarter-final in Newbury.
