People in Plymouth have been busy doing burpees and squats this summer thanks to British Military Fitness (BMF), the UK’s biggest and best-loved outdoor fitness classes, and as a result they have helped to burn off over two million calories nationwide. BMF set the target of 2 million calories when they launched their START campaign in May. BMF START events took place across the city.

The campaign had the support of rugby legend Austin Healey, and was designed to inspire the nation to get fit outdoors. British Military Fitness offered the UK more than 400 free one-hour outdoor fitness classes to anybody wanting to give their ‘bootcamp’ style of fitness a go. The events were fun and inspiring and gave local people a taste of what it’s like to ‘feel alive outside’.

Austin Healey himself knows the many benefits of physical training outside and said: “I’m thrilled that the nation has got off their couches (and sun loungers) and worked together to smash the two million calories target. British Military Fitness do a great job of helping people realise the benefits of outdoor fitness, and help thousands of people day in, day out to achieve their health and fitness goals.”

British Military Fitness first timer, Rick Carey, said: “Any newcomers who are unsure should give BMF a go! Great instructors. Excellent activities. I have quit my gym!”

Another BMF convert, Steph Grice, said: “I dreaded my first BMF class, but came home loving it. I can’t wait for Tuesdays and Thursdays now.”

So what does two million calories equate to?

  • 30,000 slices of white bread
  • 16,000 glasses of wine
  • 8,000 sausages
  • 2,092 chips (one serving of 400g of chips)
  • 14,388 cans of cola
  • 4,762 McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burgers
