While vehicles can be subject to vandalism or theft anywhere in the country, they’re unfortunately more likely to be targeted when in the city.

Recent statistics show that there were over 130,000 car thefts in 2022/23 with London bearing the brunt at over 30,000 stolen vehicles. Many of these thefts remain unsolved and with criminals targeting specific vehicles, rather than carrying out random thefts, it’s important to take appropriate steps to protect your car, such as taking out the right level of car insurance, especially when in a large city.

There are also a few other measures you can take to limit the chances of your vehicle being subject to theft or vandalism:

Use your garage

Parking your car in a garage is significantly safer than leaving it on the street, especially overnight. Many individuals use their garage for other purposes such as storage, as a workshop or even a home office. But, if you have an empty garage, it’s worth using it for your car to reduce the risk of it being targeted.

It’s also a good idea to ensure your garage is alarmed to deter any would-be opportunists.

Seek out security cameras

If you have to park on the street, look for a well-lit area that has cameras and other cars parked nearby. Vandals and thieves are more likely to target cars in quiet locations where there are fewer people and reduced traffic.

City security cameras also act as a deterrent as criminals will seek out places where they have less chance of being caught. You can also choose a car park that’s recognised by the Safer Parking Scheme for added security.

Remove valuables

When parking your car, always remove valuable items, even if you’re planning to return within a few minutes. This includes work tools, bags, laptops, purses and even loose change. If you do need to keep anything in your car while you’re not in it, ensure you keep items out of sight.

Take out the keys

This might seem obvious, but many drivers leave their car running with the keys in the ignition if they’re completing an errand and will only be a few seconds. But this leaves your vehicle open to getting stolen without any effort needed on the part of the criminal.

Close windows

Leaving windows open is an invitation for those looking to steal vehicles or items from inside. Make sure they’re all fully closed whenever you walk away from your car.

Enable the alarm

Having an alarm can draw attention to your car should anyone try and steal or vandalise it. Make sure it’s set properly at all times, especially when leaving it overnight.

Lock your car and keep your keys safe

Finally, ensure you get into the habit of locking your car and keep your keys out of sight. Don’t leave them in coat pockets and refrain from leaving them on show in the home.
