Weather warning of strong wind for Devon

Strong winds are set to batter Devon tomorrow (Tuesday 5 May), with gusts of up to 50mph forecast.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Southwesterly winds will gust to over 50 mph at times in parts of southern England and south Wales, and to 60 mph in some exposed coastal sites.

"The public are advised that these gusts may cause minor damage to trees, and make travel tricky for the likes of towing vehicles."

The warning is valid from 9am until 7pm tomorrow.

The chief forecaster said: “A rather deep and complex area of low pressure will bring windy conditions widely on Tuesday, but these winds will be strongest near the south coast in the morning, then more generally across south west England and parts of South Wales later in the day.

“Such winds would be quite normal in winter but rather less so (though not exceptional) in May, and with trees well into leaf now, and some extra holiday traffic around,  some minor impacts are likely.”

This Evening and Tonight:
Cloudy with rain becoming persistent and heavy this evening. Rain probably becoming lighter and patchier for a time overnight, but further heavy rain likely towards dawn. A mild night though under thick cloud. Minimum Temperature 9C.

Tuesday:
The rain will clear to the northeast through the morning with sunny spells to follow. Scattered heavy showers and the risk of gales will develop through the afternoon. Maximum Temperature 15C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:
Windy with sunny spells and heavy, possibly thundery showers Wednesday. Thursday will be drier and brighter with the winds easing markedly, but turning cloudier with light rain later on Friday.
