Local Water Babies have been busy making a splash for Derriford Hospital’s Maternity Unit and have raised a total of £500.00.

The money was raised through sponsored beach party themed swimming lessons, which had babies doing the limbo under a woggle, playing beach volley ball and racing rafts across the pool!

Kate Evans has been running Water Babies classes across Cornwall and South Devon since 2009, when she made a career change from an Emergency Department Doctor to a full-time baby swimming teacher.

She said: “We are thrilled to be able to support our local Maternity Unit. Almost all of the babies who swim with us will have used the services and benefitted from the excellent care they deliver. It is fantastic to be able to give something back to them.”

Sheralyn Neasham, Maternity Matron for Inpatient Services, said: “We are really grateful to the local Water Babies for generously donating such a great amount to our Maternity Unit. This money will be extremely well used and will go towards furthering out midwifery and staff training.”

Water Babies classes, designed to make the most of babies’ natural affinity with water, teach confidence and safety and use expert techniques that have been enjoyed by children from just two days old!
