Last week, Derriford Hospital's children’s wards had a special surprise when eight characters, including Batman, Darth Vader and Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, visited Level 12 of Derriford Hospital.

The group appealed to friends and family using social media and asked for them to donate new toys and gifts to give to the children currently on our wards. After receiving an amazing response, the group delivered bags full of gifts, from radio controlled helicopters, cars and books to selection boxes.

One member of the group, Daniel Powell, said: “In 2008, my son, who was seven months old, passed away after suffering from a heart condition. Having used theSuperheroes and magical characters visit  Children’s Wards a lot when he was poorly, I understand how upsetting it is for children to be stuck in hospital for long periods of time, especially over Christmas.

“We wanted to come up as a group to help put smiles on the children’s faces and give them a Christmas gift and we really do hope they enjoyed our visit. I would like to thank everyone who donated gifts, I am sure the children will really enjoy them.”

Sue Rodgers, Play Specialist Team Leader, said: “I would like to thank the group for visiting our Children’s Wards and bringing gifts for them to enjoy; they brought a lot of smiles to faces!  It is nice to think that people are prepared to give their time to make children’s stays in hospital a little brighter, particularly at this time of year.”
