Show how much you love your library

It’s National Libraries Day on Saturday 7 February and libraries are celebrating with a programme of free fun activities for all ages.

Local, public, academic and workplace libraries up and down the country will be marking the event, which promotes our library services and the professionals behind them.

There will be a pop-up library at our 1st Stop in New George Street, where people can join up and get a library card, borrow books and sign up for free e-books on their tablet. Library staff will be on hand all day to answer questions and queries and help get resources downloaded to gadgets.

Little ones can join in the fun with ‘Guess How Much I Love You’ story and rhymetime sessions for the under-fives. The Sam McBratney and Anita Jeram favourite, featuring the little nut-brown hare, is one of the world’s bestselling picture books. Sessions will take place at the following libraries and no booking is required.

The Western College Players Theatre Company will be performing a special preview of its ‘Alice in Wonderland’ show in the Central Children’s Library from 11am. This will be followed by a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at 1pm and a showing of the Alice in Wonderland film classic at 2.30pm.

There’s a chance to meet the Young Writers Squad, a writers’ group for young people age 11 to 17, at Plymstock Library at 11am, while Plympton library will be launching a new weekly chess and Scrabble club at 2pm.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “Libraries offer much more than books – they can help you get online, improve your creative writing and even trace your family tree. They also provide advice on a huge range of topics from health to patenting your business idea. National Libraries Day showcases all these services and gives people a chance to chat with staff.”
