Plympton Academy, located on Moorland Road, is launching a campaign to raise aspirations and awareness of creative careers.

The campaign, ‘Unlock your Future’, is designed to raise aspirations and broaden the horizons of young people in the South West and encourage them to explore career opportunities within creative industries. The Academy, part of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust, is holding a creative careers event as part of the campaign.

The Unlock your Future event will take place on Wednesday 28thJune and will see creative organisations from across the South West come together to celebrate the arts and unlock creative opportunities for young people. Attendees include Arts University Plymouth, Real Ideas Organisation, Falmouth University and Exim Dance, among many other creative organisations and practitioners from across a range of industries and disciplines.

The event will be hosted at The Morpurgo Studios. The venue was originally opened by Michael Morpurgo himself in 2018 and boasts specialist performing arts spaces and equipment.

The careers show will take place across two sessions. Schools from across the region have been invited to attend the first session, when organisations like Beyond Face and Barbican Theatre will be delivering workshops across a range of disciplines and skills, as well as keynote speeches. There will also be an Art exhibition by the school for attendees to explore, and a variety of stalls and demonstrations. The event will then reopen from 4pm to 6pm to members of the public, who can enjoy the fair and network with industry leaders.

Lisa Boorman, Principal of Plympton Academy, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming schools from across the South West to our upcoming creative careers event. Our aim is to broaden horizons and open doors for our young people, raising aspirations and awareness of the fantastic opportunities available to them within the creative industries.

“We are very proud of the creative opportunities that we offer to our students at Plympton Academy, and are passionate about delivering an inclusive and accessible creative curriculum to all. As part of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust, we are also committed to transforming life chances for students by broadening their horizons, and we are excited to be working alongside other schools and organisations to achieve this goal at our Unlock your Future event.”

Mandy Gage, Director of Education at Thinking Schools Academy Trust, said: “It is incredibly important that we provide our young people with the opportunities they deserve to explore career opportunities, think ahead and aim high. As an Academy and a Trust, we are passionate about delivery high-quality cultural and creative education, and about encouraging our young people to realise their potential and nurture their talents and passions. Unlock your Future is all about reminding our young people that their futures are theirs to create.”
