Plymouth University’s iconic graduation marquees have been named among the top ten temporary structures in the UK, alongside those built for the Olympic Games and London Fashion Week.

The marquees’ stunning seascape setting and ability to accommodate up to 1300 guests have been recognised by national publication Event Industry News following a hunt for the UK’s most impressive temporary structures, which began earlier this year.

Since first being erected on Plymouth Hoe in 2008, the ceremonial marquees have helped thousands of undergraduate and postgraduate students celebrate their academic efforts, while playing host to the 20,000 visitors who attend the graduation ceremonies every year.

Lisa Phillips, Head of Stakeholder Engagement at Plymouth University, said: “Our graduation ceremonies have been transformed by the marquee on Plymouth Hoe. The structure itself is visually and functionally impressive and we are so lucky to be able to celebrate the efforts of our students and Honorary Doctorates in one of the UK’s most beautiful seascape settings.”

This year musical star Michael Ball, multiple award-winning artists Gilbert and George, and former Secretary of State for Education Lord Kenneth Baker all received Honorary Doctorates inside the structures.

Between them, the two marquees contain rooms for robing, photography, ceremonies, catering and a celebration area for post-ceremony champagne and canapés.

The marquees host a variety of business and community engagement events, including the Science and Technology Showcase, the Vice-Chancellor’s Enterprise Awards and an annual fundraising gala in support of a nominated charity. They have also hosted major city events and played a key role in staging the America’s Cup in 2011.

Despite its stunning views, the location proves a challenge for the marquees’ engineers, Danco International Plc, who have to overcome a number of logistical challenges during the construction of the marquees; namely exposure to inclement weather conditions and uneven surfaces.

Patrick Ball, Business Development and Marketing Manager at Danco International Plc, said: “We are extremely proud to be associated with such a prestigious event and are thrilled that both our, and Plymouth University’s efforts, have been recognised by this announcement.”
