Simon Jupp, MP for East Devon, visited Nationwide Building Society’s Exmouth branch on the 19th of April to celebrate its 50thanniversary in the town.

Celebrating their achievements and service to the local community, Simon Jupp MP met with Michael Roberts, Manager of Nationwide Exmouth, and branch staff who help to serve some of the 37,748 Nationwide members across East Devon.

Established in 1974, the branch on Rolle Street has been present in the town for 50 years. During his visit, Simon Jupp MP welcomed Nationwide’s promise to remain in Exmouth until at least 2028 following Halifax’s recent decision to close their local branch on the 7th of August this year.

The East Devon MP wrote to Halifax in March to express his concerns over the planned closure, which leaves three bank branches in the town: TSB, Santander and Nationwide.

After his successful banking hub campaign in Sidmouth, Simon Jupp MP is pushing for more banking hubs to open in other towns across East Devon where banks have been closing or have disappeared, including Exmouth.

As part of his efforts, the MP recently co-signed a letter to the Financial Conduct Authority calling for rule changes to make it easier to set up banking hubs and has secured a debate in Parliament on the 24th of April on access to banking services and banking hubs in Devon.

Simon Jupp, MP for East Devon, said; “I was delighted to wish the Nationwide team in Exmouth a very happy 50th birthday. I was very pleased to hear their commitment to stay in Exmouth until at least 2028 after Halifax’s recent decision to close their local branch. Following the success of my banking hub campaign in Sidmouth, I will continue working with local communities to secure banking hubs in our part of Devon including Exmouth. I’m looking forward to leading the call for more banking hubs in Devon during my debate in Parliament.”

Michael Roberts, Manager of Nationwide Exmouth, said;We were honoured to welcome Simon Jupp MP to our branch in Exmouth. It was a great opportunity for us to showcase how we’re committed to serving the town and communities across Britain. After all, Nationwide has been here for 50 years now! We’ve also just extended our Branch Promise, meaning we are committed to staying in communities up and down the country. A local branch is more than just access to essential banking services, it’s a cornerstone of a thriving high street. Our research shows how important branches are, especially for people struggling with the cost of living. We’re glad to still have a strong presence on high streets around Britain – we’re here to help.”
