Major resurfacing works to continue until December

A major programme to repair some of the most severely damaged roads in Plymouth will continue until December.

The resurfacing programme, which started in June, has already seen more than 80,000 square metres of tarmac laid on 35 roads across the city. Over the next seven weeks a further 30 roads and two car parks will be resurfaced.

The works are being carried out by our highways contractor Amey on roads that suffered the worst damage after the prolonged wet weather last winter. They also include structural reconstruction of the worst affected areas and are being carried out alongside our day-to-day road maintenance programme.

A separate programme of preventative micro-asphalting is also nearing completion on roads that are showing the early signs of wear and tear. This will see around 98,000 square metres of new surface laid on 19 roads across the city, protecting against future damage and extending their life.

And it’s not just roads that are getting repaired – a footway resurfacing programme also started in July and will continue until November, giving 4,784 square metres of footway at 58 locations on 16 of the city’s main roads a new lease of life.

Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Transport said: “Improving the condition of the city’s road network is a major priority for local residents and we’ve allocated an extra £2.6 million for repairs this year as part of our commitment to spend an extra £20 million over a decade. In total we’re spending more than £4.5 million repairing and resurfacing the city’s roads this financial year – despite widespread Government cuts.

“Last winter’s severe weather ravaged our roads and we’ve seen a massive increase in the number of potholes needing repair this year. We will continue to push for significantly increased funding to invest in the widespread resurfacing needed to bring Plymouth’s roads up to a satisfactory standard. In the meantime we’re doing all we can to repair as many problem areas as possible.”

Residents and businesses near the works are being notified in advance by letter and diversion routes will be signed. Access to properties will be maintained wherever possible.
