A new book created by two Devon women aims to help anyone who has experienced domestic abuse to move on positively with their lives.

The Empowerment After Domestic Abuse Workbook has been created by Jeanette Brown and Debbie Coleiro, who both experienced and left abusive relationships. The pair have worked in the field of domestic abuse for over 10 years, delivering courses and support to others.

Jeanette said: “The book is designed to empower people to recognise domestic abuse, set goals, work through decisions and support them in taking the first steps to a new beginning.

“It covers hard-hitting topics such as why it is so hard to leave an abusive relationship and provides realistic advice on how to set boundaries and ways of applying assertiveness.”

Created as an accessible, interactive workbook, it includes exercises, goal-setting, checklists and opportunities for therapeutic colouring-in.

Empowerment After Domestic Abuse Workbook will be ethically distributed by on-demand publisher Lulu, which has a proven commitment to social, environmental, and community good. The book will also be available at selected local bookshops.

One reviewer said: "This book will be useful to anyone who has been in an abusive relationship or suffered domestic abuse. Anyone who would like to rebuild their confidence, self-esteem and learn how past relationships have affected your life, emotions and choices. Finally, that it is possible to rebuild and discover yourself again."

The book is being launched at a special online event on 30 April, which will feature talks from special guests Lyndsay Howell, Devon and Cornwall SARC General Manager; Collette Eaton-Harris, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Lead for the new Devon Clinical Commissioning Group; and domestic abuse survivor – or ‘thriver’ - Anna Davidson who has become a hugely successful digital coach, best-selling author and winner of the DHgate The Women Connect ‘Her Power’ Entrepreneurship  Award 2020.

The development of the workbook was funded by the National Lottery Community Fund.
