Plymouth City Council is introducing free Wi-Fi in four city libraries.

From Thursday 4 July, customers visiting the Central Library and Plymstock, Plympton and St Aubyn libraries will enjoy free internet access on their own laptops, tablets, smartphones and other mobile devices.

This is the first phase in a roll-out of free Wi-Fi across Plymouth’s library network.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “Over recent years the number of people owning laptops and smartphones has increased substantially and will only continue to rise. We’re extremely pleased to be introducing Wi-Fi in our libraries to meet the needs of customers and help them access information and opportunities.”

The Council is a partner in the citywide Health Information Project and offering free Wi-Fi will make it even easier for customers to access health-related information, including advice about lifestyle choices and recreation as well as the Plymouth Online Directory and NHS Choices websites.

Wi-Fi will also allow more library customers to access to the internet at the same time, by providing an additional channel to the library’s well-used public computers.

Library Services Manager Chris Goddard said: “Free Wi-Fi will help people to access Council and Government services, get health advice and information, search and apply for jobs and much more.”
