This Thursday, East Devon joins people across the world who are standing in solidarity with Ukraine, marking 18 months since Russia’s full-scale invasion began, and Ukraine's 32nd Independence Day.

East Devon District Council (EDDC) is flying the Ukrainian flag outside its Blackdown House headquarters in Honiton, and its hardworking Homes for Ukraine team are hosting an event in Cranbrook for guests and hosts with Ukrainian food, creative workshops, and activities.

Councillor Paul Arnott, leader of the council, said: "Many people have recognised the trauma suffered over the last eighteen months by the Ukrainians, and have kindly reached out to them at their time of crisis and given them a home. I am aware from friends who have stepped up to do this that guests and hosts alike have benefitted greatly. Sadly this war is still raging and It would be wonderful if more kind people could come forward now."

More than 300 guests have been supported in East Devon, with 35 families moving into private rented accommodation with the support team’s help. This ensures stability and independence for the families.

East Devon residents with spare rooms or any form of accommodation, are still needed to provide vulnerable refugees with safe homes. The length of guests’ stay can be short-term, allowing more flexibility for potential hosts.

The council’s Environmental Health team carry out home inspections, and its support team ensure that guests and hosts are well matched.

A host in Sidmouth told us that: "It's been a pleasure hosting our family, we feel we have additional grandchildren and will miss them when they move to their new home”

The Homes for Ukraine team provide follow-up support to both guests and hosts, such as guidance on applying for Universal Credit, finding a job, debt management, registering with schools and doctors, as well as promoting events to help Ukrainians integrate into the community.
