Devon and Cornwall Police in Plymouth today announced a new commitment to community-focused policing with the introduction of the community engagement pledge.

The pledge sets out several expectations for neighbourhood policing teams across the city, underpinning core principles regarding the level of service the public can expect.

We will;

  • Always treat you fairly with dignity and respect ensuring you have fair access to our services at a time that is reasonable and suitable for you
  • Provide you with information so you know who your dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team is, where they are based, how to contact them and how to work with them.
  • Ensure your Neighbourhood Policing Team are visible at times when they will be most effective and when you tell us you most need them.
  • Respond to every message directed to your Neighbourhood Policing Team within 72 hours and, where necessary, provide a more detailed response as soon as we can.
  • Arrange regular engagement events to agree your priorities, at least once a month, giving you a chance to meet your local team with other members of your community.
  • Provide monthly updates on progress, and on local crime and policing issues. This will include details of what action we and our partners are taking to make your neighbourhood safer.
  • If you have been a victim of crime agree with you how often you would like to be kept informed of progress in your case and for how long. You have the right to be kept informed at least every month if you wish and for as long as is reasonable.

“We believe that the best way to keep our community safe is to work together,” said Superintendent Phil Williams, head of local policing and partnerships in Plymouth. “The Pledge is a set of expectations for the neighbourhood teams in their everyday dealings with communities. It shows our commitment to building relationships with our residents and businesses, that we will listen to your concerns and work with you to solve problems.”

“We are excited to launch this approach which reinforces our commitment to the public. Whilst many of the principles are not new, with teams already doing some great work, with communities and partners, we should be accountable and therefore it is only right we share these expectations” said Superintendent Williams. Information about your local team, events and how to contact us can be found on the Devon and Cornwall Police website
