Businesses will be able to dispose of their waste at Chelson Meadow Recycling Centre as part of a move to make the Council more commercial.

From September 1 the household recycling centre will be opening its gates to companies that need to get rid of items such as  stone and soil, bonded asbestos, wood, electrical and any mixed waste. Garden waste from landscape gardners is still available.
Up until now small businesses or contractors who are registered waste carriers were not allowed to use the site. Instead they had to use private waste disposal firms to get rid of rubbish generated through their business.

The change is part of the Council’s transformation programme which has involved a detailed look at how the organisation can be more efficient and more commercially-minded and making better uses of its assets.

Councillor Brian Vincent, Cabinet member for the Environment, said: “We have great facilities for our residents to get rid of material for recycling, composting and disposal.

“Now we want to extend this service – for a charge – to small businesses. In the past this has not been possible as it would have been the Council tax payer that foots the bill for getting rid of business waste.

“However, if businesses pay, it removes this issue. We’ve also listened to what traders have said and have devised a set-up here that we hope will save them time, effort and money. Instead of travelling out of the city to other sites, businesses with small quantities of waste can head for Chelson Meadow.”

The initiative is part of the Council’s wider push to make more of its services and assets by charging businesses which generate small quantities of waste and can take it to Chelson Meadow.

Chelson Meadow commercial waste recycling centre opens from 8am to 4.30pm from Monday to Thursday, from 8am to 3.30pm on Friday and from 8am until 12pm on Saturday. Businesses must report to the weighbridge.

Full details of the price list for different types of waste can be downloaded from a web page on the Council website.
Businesses will be able to pay cash or by card

Businesses hoping to use it MUST be registered waste carriers (application forms will also be on the website) and only vehicles of up to 3.5 tonnes (transit size) will be able to use this service.
