Plymouth City Council is revising opening hours at its libraries to make them more consistent and better meet customer demand.

The improvements form part of the Council’s library service modernisation plans and follow public consultation carried out last year.

The new timetables will start on Thursday 2 January and will mean the city’s 17 libraries are open an extra 11 hours a week.

More libraries will be open from Monday through to Saturday and opening hours have been scheduled more evenly across the week to make them easier to remember and more convenient for customers.

The city’s six largest libraries – Central, Crownhill, Plympton, Plymstock, Southway and St Budeaux – will all be open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday, with no changes to their current Saturday opening times.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “Our current opening hours vary considerably from library to library – and even from day to day – which is confusing and inconvenient for customers. To help make it easier for people we’ve looked at when our libraries are at their busiest and agreed a more regular timetable that should better meet customer demand. Individual libraries might close slightly earlier or open slightly later than they currently do on certain days but overall we’ve increased the number of days and hours our libraries are available.”
