Charlotte Ellis and Claire Belcher connected in the waters of the Exe. They find inspiration and solace from the flow of life on the river, with their early morning and moonlit swims giving them an immersive pathway for expression through their art.

Charlotte said ‘As I swim, I embrace the nature around me. In my paintings and lino prints, I try to recreate the sense of peace I feel when swimming.  As I work, in my head I am always in or near the water.’

Seaglass Gallery in Lympstone will be hosting their first joint exhibition ‘Ebb and Flow’ as part of Devon Open Studios. ‘Ebb and Flow’ is inspired by the ever-changing light, Exe estuary waters, and wildlife. Together these two artists cross the land-water divide with paintings, prints and pyrography.

Claire explains “As a pyrography artist I aim to create unique pieces inspired by the natural beauty of wood, that carries a flow of water. I am a Professor of Fire Ecology, at the University of Exeter, so perhaps it is no surprise that I also uses fire in my creative practice!’

Come and meet Charlotte and Claire in Seaglass Gallery to see their work, talk more about the processes behind their practice and watch demonstrations or join a workshop (lino printing). All works are available to purchase.

Bruce from Seaglass Gallery says ‘Devon Open Studios is an important and supportive event for artists and small businesses in Devon.’

Their exhibition is part of the Devon Open Studios annual flagship event of Devon Artist Network of which they are both members. The event runs 9th-24th of September.
