Last chance to enter Plymouth Race for Life

WOMEN in Plymouth are being urged to grab their last chance to enter Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life at The Hoe as there are just two weeks left until registration closes.

Nearly 3000 women have already joined a ‘pink army’ ready to take on cancer on Sunday 21 June, but there are still places left.

One of those is inspirational mum Carla Riley-Wood who has fought a long battle with cancer.

She will be the guest of honour at this year’s event.

Carla, 36, whose leg was amputated at the age of ten, will set the runners off before taking part in the 5K herself.

Carla was just seven years old when she was told she had bone cancer.

Having endured years of pain in her right leg and visits to see doctors and psychologists believing she was attention seeking. Carla was finally given the devastating diagnosis whilst still at primary school.

Just six months ago Carla learnt to walk again with the aid of a prosthetic limb – the first time she has been able to do so in 26 years.

The determined  lady will be sharing her experience on stage at Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life which takes place on Sunday June 21 on The Hoe and to help raise money for life-saving research.

Entry closes at midnight on Friday June 19 and organisers are encouraging mums, daughters, grannies, sisters, friends and workmates who want to take part in the 5k women-only event to sign up as soon possible at raceforlife.org.

Ruth Chamings, Event Manager for Race for Life in the South West said: “We are absolutely thrilled that so many women have entered Race for Life in Plymouth.  But we still have places left so we are urging women to sign up as soon as possible.”

In 2014, over 4000 women took part in Race for Life in Plymouth and helped raise an incredible £163,662 for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work. This year, the charity hopes the thousands who have entered will hit a fundraising target of £165,000.

By raising money through Race for Life, people in Plymouth are helping Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists make advances in research which will help more men, women and children survive.

Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its ground-breaking research but with help from the people of Plymouth the charity intends to beat cancer sooner.
