SSG Training and Consultancy, a Southwest health and safety company, has developed a new initiative to enhance employee wellbeing and foster a strong sense of community within the team.

The new monthly event, ‘SSG Go Walking’, has been implemented to help achieve this goal by combining low-intensity exercise with team bonding.

This monthly walk has is part of the SSG Wellbeing initiative, in line with the company’s Wellbeing Forum; a group of employees who bring their colleagues’ ideas and feedback about elements of the company or wellbeing activities which are discussed and then fed on to senior management.

The SSG Go Walking event is open to all employees, as well as their families and pets. Organised by team members Laura and Sarah, previous walks have taken them to locations including Sheepstor, Cann Woods, and Saltram House, often featuring pastries and treats.

Currently, the walks occur after work, but with the transition into Autumn and Winter, they will be scheduled for Sundays to avoid darker evenings and encourage greater attendance.

So far, they have seen a strong turnout from both staff and their family members, and there has been a noticeable increase in new participants each month.

Laura Haylock, co-organiser, said, “SSG go walking is a great opportunity to get out, blow away the cobwebs and enjoy the beautiful surroundings we have on our doorstep in Devon. It’s not just about walking; it’s about creating a healthy, happier and more connected workplace and a great way to build new friendships. Everyone is welcome and we have tried to plan a variety of routes to suit all fitness levels!”

Alongside SSG Go Walking, SSG also have a number of other team activities over the next few months including camping at River Dart Country Park, mindfulness sessions and the annual Christmas party.
