Plymouth Lives: Martin Bush

Name: Martin Bush

And what do you do?

Artist

How would you describe yourself in five words?

Happy, kind, adventurous, mostly calm.

How would you describe Plymouth in five words?

Fresh, relaxed, honest, peaceable, historic.

What brought you to Plymouth?

When looking for a place to be as an artist and having visited Plymouth over several years, the opportunities it seemingly offered as a modernising city made it an ideal choice to continue my journey as an artist.

Which part of Plymouth is home?

I live in Stonehouse and my gallery studio is in The Royal William Yard so it's nice to walk to work.

What is your favourite place in Plymouth?

My back yard with a glass of wine if I was honest, but another would be my local pub where I can chill with good old English sarcasm among people I know!

What is your favourite Plymouth event?

Well I enjoyed the America’s Cup and British Art Show, but also drifting round various art exhibitions that pop up in the city.

What was the last live performance you saw in Plymouth and where did you see it?

Oh now you're being cheeky coz I’m going to let the cat out the bag... Leona Lewis at the Pavilions - on my own coz I didn’t want anyone to know. Oops, now they know!

Favourite place to eat out in or near Plymouth?

I have to say Asia Chic as my wife is the head chef, but the other is my kitchen at home when she has left me some delicious surprises!

Best coffee in town?

Not fussy, the one I make in my gallery does me.

Favourite pub?

Many to choose from but my local The Artillery Arms packs a good punch.

Favourite locally produced food or drink?

Sorry but I am Asian when it comes to food and Singha Beer only tastes its best when I am sitting in my favourite bar in Thailand.

Favourite shop?

Hmmmm shopping - don’t do this one! OK, my local corner shop because the local gossip is funny and the service is funny too.

Favourite shopping area?

My gallery....?!

Plymouth Argyle or Plymouth Albion?

Both

Beach or moors?

Both

What or where is Plymouth's best kept secret?

Need you ask?!

What one change would you like to see in Plymouth?

A travelator installed so I could zap to other parts of the UK in a jiffy. It's OK though, as being a long way to London is what keeps us here. Seriously - The Tate.

Who is your local hero or heroine?

No one person, just everyone who is working to make Plymouth a better and exciting place to live.

Do you belong to any local clubs or societies?

No time. As an artist, all my spare time is taken up with painting.

What are you up to next?

Many many things. This world I have created never stops so I will continue its journey as it comes.
