The location of Devon makes it a perfect area for the distribution of products like food and drink to neighbouring areas like Cornwall, Somerset and beyond. With the Devon district becoming the South West’s ‘cheapest rental area’ according to a new report, this makes strategic sense from a business perspective to keep large warehouses there.

Keep on reading to find out some of Devon’s largest warehouses and where they are located in the county.

  1.  Amazon Warehouse

In 2019, Amazon opened a huge warehouse based in Devon with the aim to ‘keep up with the huge demand’, and it’s located at the LIDL distribution centre near Exeter, not far from the M5. This makes it a perfect location to distribute products across Devon and Cornwall, as well as other areas in the UK.

The centre did have a previous location in Exeter, however the new centre is much more open in terms of size bringing an extra 100,000 sq foot aimed to match the increased demand. This also helped bring a new set of jobs to the area.

  1. Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Trust

Another one of the biggest warehouses in Devon and Exeter goes to the NHS Trust, which is located in Kestrel Way, one of the main routes through Sowton Industrial Estate, adjacent to the M5 motorway. Similar to the Amazon warehouse, the close flexibility to the M5 allows good distribution of products and services.

When the lease was set up back in 2020 on the Sowton Industrial Estate in Exeter, the 45,318 sq ft property was then used for PPE and medical record storage. During the time, the building was given a big refurbishment to the interior and exterior, becoming an up to date warehouse facility.

  1. Gregory Distribution Shed

The Gregory Distribution Shed is another one of the largest distribution buildings in Devon. It comes in at 72,000 square ft, and is located in Hitchcocks Business Park near Willand. The business park is owned by GXO, the world’s largest pure-play contract logistics provider.

  1. ABC Warehouse Plymouth

The ABC Warehouse in Plymouth is a whopping 100,000 square ft warehouse facility based in Devon. The warehouse lets itself out for businesses requiring extra storage space to accommodate items. The warehouse is large enough to accommodate 1,000 items should a client wish to store their products there. The warehouse is located at the Airport Business Centre, near Thornberry road.

There are new warehouse developments in the county

The good news is that there are new warehouse developments still ongoing in Devon, as 2024 progresses. As well as logistical benefits to businesses across Devon, this will bring extra jobs and opportunities to the area. The developments are happening at Exeter Logistics Park, which is owned by UK construction company Glencar. The project is set to be a 42,500 sq ft facility, and will also be home to other features such as an on-site trim trail, outdoor gym areas and bodyweight exercise equipment.

Overall, we hope this article showcases how well Devon strives to be a hotspot for large warehouses.
