Devon and Cornwall Police have warned that the hot weather may be leaving some residents vulnerable to opportunistic burglars.

Simple tips such as closing and locking windows and doors when you are away from the property, as well as being careful about the windows that are left open while still inside the property, could prevent you from becoming a victim of crime.

Bob Bunney, Devon and Cornwall Police Crime Reduction Lead said: “During the summer months we do see a marked increase in house burglary reports with entry gained through windows left open in warmer weather.

“Leaving a front door wide open, even when you are at home, provides an ideal opportunity for a criminal to reach inside and steal your valuables such as a wallet, handbag or car keys.”

Residents are reminded to keep all doors and windows locked and closed, take keys out of doors when locked and mark any valuable belongings to make detection easier should the worst happen.

If going on holiday you should ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your home, draw your curtains and collect your mail, newspaper and milk so it does not pile up at your front door and don’t advertise you are away by posting it on social media, as burglars use these networks too.
