Minor Injuries closes at Nuffield with return to Derriford Hospital
The ‘Minors’ section of University Hospital Plymouth’s Emergency Department, which temporarily moved to Nuffield Hospital in April this year, will return to the main Derriford hospital site on Thursday 10 December at 08:00am.
Work has been undertaken in the Emergency Department to improve social distancing and safely accommodate those being seen for minor injuries such as sprains and strains, cuts and grazes etc, as well as for major emergencies.
Caroline Dawe, Care Group Manager for Medicine at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust said: “We’d like to thank the Nuffield Hospitals for their vital support during this period.
“By bringing staff back to the main Emergency Department, we create efficiencies for effective streaming to get patients to the right specialist teams with our new triaging system. We have also been able to create a separate Minors and Paediatrics reception.”
The public can be seen for minor injuries at Derriford seven days a week.
If you need urgent, but not life-threatening care, call NHS 111 before turning up to an emergency department. If, following a conversation with NHS 111, it is appropriate for you to attend the emergency department you may be scheduled a time to attend.
Thinking NHS 111 First will also help you get to the most appropriate service when you may not have to attend the emergency department. This could include self-care or a slot at your GP practice, or a nearby Urgent Treatment Centre.
You can still go to the Emergency Department without calling ahead but thinking “NHS 111 First” will mean:
- Shorter waiting times via a booked slot at the emergency department or another appropriate service and
- safe social distancing away from busy emergency department waiting rooms to protect you and others from COVID-19.
If you have a life-threatening emergency, dial 999 for an ambulance.
