Improved support for vulnerable young parents

Vulnerable young parents in Plymouth are to get more support from an improved accommodation service funded by Plymouth City Council.

It will offer 16 to 25 year old parents with babies a safe environment and help them learn how to live independently.

Cabinet member for Public Health and Adult Social Care Councillor Sue McDonald approved the contract award to Westward Housing Group to run the service.

Cllr McDonald said: “This is a really important service providing high quality support to some of the most vulnerable young people. It ensures these young parents with babies are given an opportunity to live as a family and equips them with the skills they need. It will also give them support so they can stay in education, training or work.”

Support will also be offered to young parents who are already living independently in the community to help them manage their lives.

Westward Support has longstanding experience of successfully working with young people, and specialist expertise in supporting young parents and their children. We look forward to developing the way we work with young parents in Plymouth - as we support them in building their life and parenting skills.”
