Dancers to stage a thrilling show for Summer Reading Challenge
There’s a spine-tingling treat in store for families visiting the Central Library on Tuesday 6 August, with super spooky performances from the Second Hand Dance Company.
Dancers will be touring 16 libraries across the South West as part of this year’s ‘Creepy House’ Summer Reading Challenge, thanks to funding from The Arts Council. Pavilion Dance South West have composed music especially for the show, inspired by children’s classics such as Alan Ahlberg’s ‘Funny Bones’ and other ghostly tales.
Young People’s Service Manager Julia Hale said: “Children might not think about the links between books and dance but the Creepy House theme lends itself really well to this sort of dynamic interpretation. The performers and the audience will have great fun moving through the different floors and spaces of the library together as the spooky story unfolds. We’re really looking forward to seeing the dancers animate the library and the reactions of children and parents.”
Performances will take place on Tuesday 6 August at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Spaces are limited so advance booking is essential – call 01752 305900.
Creepy House challenges children aged four to 12 to join its gang of intrepid explorers and read up to six books over the summer holiday. Along the way they uncover secrets and collect stickers (some are stinky) to complete a special Creepy House poster. It’s free to join – they just need to visit their local library to sign up and receive their special poster pack.
Youngsters who complete the challenge will receive certificates and medals at special assemblies when they return to school in the autumn. They will also be entered into a free draw to win a Lego Monster Castle, courtesy of Barratt Homes.
Other special events taking place as part of Creepy House include spooky storytelling sessions in the Victorian schoolroom of the Merchant’s House on Friday 2 and Friday 16 August.
