This year, visitors to National Trust’s Saltram Estate in Plympton will have the chance to experience Christmas with the servants. For this special family event on 14 and 15 December, the domestic areas of this Palladian mansion will be brought to life with tours that see the hustle and bustle of a whole host of servants preparing to celebrate the festive season.

Families joining in with the event will meet various servants and learn more about how festive traditions have changed over time, and how different their ‘below stairs’ Christmas celebrations were from the splendour of the family’s lavish feasting and festivities.

Children visiting will enjoy helping the servants to prepare for Christmas in the house; which includes running errands, rolling pastry with the cook and then joining the housemaids for carols around the Christmas tree with jolly old Father Christmas dressed in his traditional green outfit.

A servants’ Christmas tours take place between 12 noon and 4pm on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 December, with last entry at 3.30pm. Timed entry slots will be in operation with bookings taken in Visitor Reception on the day – so come early to avoid disappointment.  Normal garden admission charges apply, National Trust members and under fives free.
