Dame Helen Mirren stars as an elderly holocaust survivor who begins a lawsuit to reclaim the artwork stolen by the Nazis. It’s a film that entertains with warmth and humour while teaching us something about history, law and justice with enormous heart and compassion.

Dir. Alan Rickman, UK, 2015, 116 mins.

Cast. Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Helen McCrory, Matthias Schoenaerts.

Rickman has fashioned a spritely period romp, and plays King Louis XIV with a dry bemusement. But the film’s greatest strength lies in its emphasis on women and their relationships, with a sublime performance from Winslet. A Little Chaos is a delicious treat for green-fingered romantics.

Dir: Ryan Gosling, US, 2014, 95 mins.

Ryan Gosling makes his directing debut with this dark fantasy drama. Featuring an underwater town, dreamy visuals, a magical curse and an eclectic score, it’s clear Gosling has been influenced by David Lynch and Nicolas Winding Refn, but this film is very much his own.

The Falling (15)

Wednesday 3 June, 5.45pm, Thursday 4 June, 8.30pm

Dir: Carol Morley, UK, 2014, 100 mins.

Cast: Maisie Williams, Maxine Peake, Greta Scacchi, Joe Cole.

After a tragedy occurs at a school, a mysterious fainting epidemic breaks out threatening the stability of all involved; this bold head-rush of a film is confirmation that Morley is fast becoming one of Britain’s most distinctive and exciting filmmakers.

Far From The Madding Crowd (U)
Wednesday 3 June, 2pm and 8pm, Thursday 4 June, 5pm

Dir. John Schlesinger, UK, 1967, 168 mins.

Cast. Julie Christie, Terence Stamp, Alan Bates.

Thomas Hardy’s headstrong and independent, farmer Bathsheba Everdene is among the most modern of 19th-century heroines. She captivates the hearts and minds of three very different men: an honest and hardworking farmer, a wealthy but tortured landowner, and a reckless and violent swordsman. But as emotions become entangled, free spirited and innocent folly soon leads to devastating tragedy. Almost 50 years on, this restoration reveals the film as an immersive piece of cinema with Hardy’s cruel ironies and bleak lyricism fully intact. What resonates so deeply is the way in which Schlesinger and cinematographer Nicolas Roeg frame the passions and tragedy at the film’s heart against the patterns of rural life and the harsh, sodden beauty of the Dorset landscape.
