The Brook Inn at Plympton St Maurice is introducing a new weekly get-together for people in the local area who live alone, are feeling lonely or simply would like to meet more people.

Each Thursday afternoon (starting Thursday May 17th) from 3.30pm - 4.30pm, we’ll be offering a cuppa and a friendly venue to chat.... and it’s absolutely FREE.

TLC Thursdays were inspired when landlord John Govier was watching a TV programme about loneliness.

“We’ve always aimed to position The Brook Inn at the heart of the community,” he said.

“We already host lots of activities like Tai Chi lessons, watercolour art classes, lots of live music and even line- dancing nights - and in the four years we’ve been at the pub our staff and customers have raised over £10,000 for local charities too - but I got to thinking that we haven’t really done anything to give a reason for people who live alone - or who are feeling lonely - to get out and mingle.”

John posted the idea on the pub’s Facebook page and asked his customers to come up with a name for the event.

“One of our regulars, Glenis Gibbs, came up with what we thought would make a catchy title - TLC (standing for Tea, Laughter and Company) and so we went ahead and had a logo made by another of our customers, Peggy Melmoth.”

The idea has captured the imagination of other customers too and John has been inundated with messages from people who want to offer their help.

“I’ve had musicians offering to provide sing-alongs, South West MP Gary Streeter is going to do a Q+A session (on Thursday 24th May), a local historian has offered to give a talk, some local WI members have said they’ll maybe bake some cakes and Rev Robert Harris the local rector has offered to help in a variety of ways too,” said John.

“Pubs have historically always been the hub of the local community and this is as important today as it’s ever been.”

TLC Thursdays will take place at The Brook Inn from 3.30pm - 4.30pm each week.
