At 9am on OCTOBER 7th, Plymouth Guild Hall will once again open its doors for the second instalment of DEVCON17, one of The South West’s Biggest Sci-Fi, film and family events and as usual the organisers at EVENTS FRONTIER have lots planned for their visitors with something they hope will appeal to newcomers of all ages as well as their regular fan base.

Who would have thought 17 years ago, a romance that sparked a marriage proposal after a mere 3 days, a simple wooden bench stall in Plymouth Market & a goal mission to ‘Make a Difference & Help Create Smiles for Adoptive Children’, as is their company mantra, would have resulted in the huge creation and magnitude that DEVCON has become.

With visitor numbers reaching into the thousands, the event has continued to go from strength to strength.  What’s more, it would appear that who ever said work and pleasure don’t mix got it dramatically wrong with this company as the sparks just kept on coming for their staff, whom have celebrated 2 engagements and happy ever after nuptials for their very own Bat Man & Wonder Woman.

Star Guest David Warner’s acting career spans over many decades, a highly acclaimed English actor who is known for playing both romantic leads and sinister or villainous characters across a vast range of media including stage, film, animation, television and video games.  David has a worldwide following from his many appearances in Star Trek and Tron, with roles in Planet of the Apes, Bat Man & Titanic, the list is simply endless making it a real honor to be able to welcome him to Plymouth.

As well as David, DEVCONs guest list is once again proud to boast names from TV and the big screen including Actors from Star Wars, Dr Who, Batman, Harry Potter, Bond and more. All of whom will be offering the sale of Autographs some exclusive to DEVCON Plymouth and eager to share their tales of the industry and the film folk, they have worked with over the years.

Organiser Lea Shelford, shared: “As always, we have a great mix of terrific traders on board with us with all the visitor favourites & lots of great new stall holders, selling all the hugely popular goods, fabulous and unique handmade crafted items and even a chance to nab yourself one off & highly collectable items.”

Following on from one of the core aims that we launched at the March Event, we have continued with our educational focus, show casing skilled artist and writer guests, all offering Q&A sessions, art demos and tuition and sharing how they got in to this highly competitive industry.  We have lots of interactive and table top gaming in store for all abilities & skill levels of play.  So don’t worry if you’re a complete novice, there’ll be help on hand to show you what to do and help you become a champion in no time.

October 7th introduces the next stage of our Art & Comic Competition, which invites all entries from all ages and abilities.  We have also recruited our very own ‘DEVCON Young Persons Ambassadors’, who will be on hand to offer a like-minded guidance and event info, for our younger visitors.  We’re on the search for another candidate aged 12-16, so if you think you fit the bill and would like to get involved, please come along and introduce yourself to us in our Dedicated Comic & Gaming Zone located in the Foyer.

For this event we have expanded on the regular feasts of fun and fantasy and have dedicated a whole floor to our huge and fabulous costume fraternity, offering lessons in costume and model making, amazing special effects make up creations, just like those seen in some of the most gruesome TV and film scenes, as well as lots of fun and games for all and lots more on the menu. We are so proud of the new team of talented volunteers and professionals we have on board with us who are offering such a fabulous schedule of events and who’s core aim is ‘about making everyone feel valued’, check out our webpage for all the things we have instore.

This event sees the second heat of The South West’s Cosplay Championships and welcomes visitors to don their favourite Super Hero Outfit & join in our Costume Mascaraed.

Star Wars fans can also come along and gain new skills at the Light Saber and Combat Academy, which proved really popular in March. DEVCON just wouldn’t be the same without our amazing and talented professional costume groups who will be offering their usual array of brilliant costumes & lots of fab photo opportunities for our visitors.

So, all in all, I like to think we have ticked all of the boxes to offer a great day and event that will create lots and lots of smiles for our wonderful visitors, whom we are really looking forward to welcoming.

Steve Hughes, Chief Executive, Plymouth City Centre Company said: “We are delighted that Final Frontier is bringing such a large scale event to the city centre. This will be a great opportunity for visitors to meet film and TV stars, collect memorabilia and see comic artists at work. We are pleased to be able to support this and indeed all growing businesses that make such a big contribution to Plymouth.”
