Theatre Centre explores the changing role of drama at Lipson Academy

As part of a series of celebrations marking its 60th Birthday, Theatre Centre is presenting a very special performance of a new play by Roy Williams, Advice for the Young at Heart, at a secondary school in Plymouth.

The performance at Plymouth's Lipson Co-opertive Academy is one of five at secondary schools across the country. The others are in Leicester, Burnley, Hove and Sheffield.

Showcase performances will be followed by panel discussions exploring the changing role of drama within the school community and curriculum.

“We’re really excited to be presenting Showcase performances as part of our 60th Birthday Tour. Our performances mainly happen in schools, behind closed doors, so we look forward to introducing our work to practitioners from local theatre companies and arts organisations, and a wider network of teachers," says Marigold Hughes, Theatre Centre’s Schools Producer.

"The events present a strong platform on which to host a discussion about the role of Drama and the arts in school communities, and their place on the curriculum.”

These discussions will bring together young people, local policy makers, arts organisations and teachers.

The Plymouth event will take place at: Lipson Co-operative Academy, Plymouth, 5pm, 9 October 2013

Advice for the Young at Heart is a new play for young people aged 14+ by Sucker Punch playwright Roy Williams. The play is touring ten UK venues and 40 schools this autumn, and the text will be published by Methuen this September.

The production marks Theatre Centre’s 60th Birthday, celebrating six decades touring outstanding new plays to young audiences around the UK.
