Plympton Academy wins Bronze award from The Woodland Trust

Staff and students at Plympton Academy are celebrating receiving an award from the Woodland Trust. The environmental charity has recognised the school’s commitment to green issues by presenting them with a Bronze Award as a Green Tree School.
Over the past two years, students have been involved in a number of projects including tree planting, making bat, bird and bug boxes, planting wildflowers and creating wildlife friendly areas.
A grant was received from the Devon Wildlife Trust earlier this year which enabled the Academy to buy insect attracting wildflower seeds to help create bat friendly habitats.
“The Woodland Trust donated hedging trees to the Academy this winter. However, last year our students collected tree seeds, stratified them over the winter and we are now growing our own trees on site. Our aim is to build a sustainable conservation programme at the Academy led by our students,” said (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator), Martin Edmonds.
Principal, Lisa Boorman said, “I am really proud that our students’ efforts to improve their local environment, working alongside The Woodland Trust and the Devon Wildlife Trust, have been recognised with this award and our next goal is to gain the silver.”
