This month has been extremely busy for Lifeworks College as we approach the end of the academic year. Last week, 15 Lifeworks students attends a residential at the Calvert Trust in the Lake District. For many students, this was the first time away from home, so it isn’t just the activities that helped to develop their skills. Travelling over 300 miles, eating together, sharing a bedroom and spending time with each other encourages tolerance, consideration for others and self-reliance.

The students had a fantastic week full of adventure. The outdoor adventure programme included ghyll scrambling, orienteering, canoeing, hiking, zip line and high ropes. Three students even challenged themselves to climb Cat Bells, a 1,480ft fell! In the evenings, students enjoyed swimming in the hydro pool, movie night, a disco and socialising with their peers in the common room

CONQUER THEIR FEARS AND DISCOVER NEW TALENTS

The residential provided opportunities for students to conquer their fears and discover new talents. With each day, there were new challenges to overcome and opportunities to build confidence with the support of their peers. It was clear that to see that many students felt a sense of achievement at the end of the week.

The residential provided a memorable learning opportunity and one which the students will never forget. We would like to thank all the staff who volunteered their time to support the students, from being a helping hand at dinner, singing songs in the minibus (there were lots!) to gentle words of encouragement as the nerves kicked in. This week highlighted that there’s nothing more rewarding than helping our young people embark upon their own personal journey of development and develop their self-belief and confidence.
