Staff at the Central Library will be donning onesies on Wednesday 2 April to help raise awareness of autism.

Onesie Wednesday was created by The National Autistic Society as a way for people to show their support for anyone on the autistic spectrum. By wearing a onesie or pyjamas for the day, people are saying ‘it’s alright to be different’.

This year the event coincides with World Autism Awareness Day and staff are inviting people to join in with the celebrations, as well as find out about the information and advice the library has on offer.

Councillor Sue McDonald, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Adult Social Care, said: “We’re really pleased our staff are supporting these events, which help to raise awareness of autism and the challenges faced by people living with the condition.”

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith added: “Our libraries have books and resources on a wide range of health, wellbeing and social care issues and staff can help you access online information and community services. In May the Central Library will also be launching informal drop-in sessions for anyone on the autistic spectrum who’d like advice or support.”

The first autism drop-in session will be held on the ground floor of the Central Library from 12.30pm to 2.30pm on Monday 12 May.
